I have float switches on my reservoirs in the garage that can roll out from under my workbench. The wiring from the switches connect to a screw terminal to CAT5 connecter. I also have the CAT5 connectors on a DIN rail on my controller board in the garage. Those have the connector for the sense ports with wires hooked to the screw terminals. This has been working for years so apparently the wire size in CAT5 cable is enough for the float switches. Below is photos showing the DIN rail and one of the reservoirs with the connector. What type and size of wire is best for wiring up a float switch.

I did not pay any attention to which wires in the cable. I just used adjacent connectors on the screw terminal at the switches.I have used telephone wire but I am finding it a bit flimsy and tends to break. When you use the cat 5 are you using it as a twisted pair?
