I use fans to keep the sump cool. I made a bracket to hold both fans. I had to modify these fans for use in a harsh environment. These fans keep the tank at 78 degrees or below.
The fan blades are ok. It is the electronics that get attacked. I had to modify the ones I use to get them to last more than a month or two. I have photos of the mods in post #30 of my build thread here Build Thread - Canopy and Stand Build for 42 Gallon Hex Tank
I found a 12v fan that has a IP67 rating here but not one for USB Coolerguys 80mm (80x80x25) High Speed IP67 12v Fan CG8025H12-IP67. They also have 120mm versions for a larger fan. I am going to try one of these out as a replacement for the ones I currently use.
I just got a 5v usb fan off of amazon for a few bucks and am going to mount it on the stand blowing air into the stand. My theory is that it shouldn't get corroded because it should see constant fresh air. I'll report back whether that holds up.
Granted, it's a 6-foot tank and I found the typical 100mm muffin fan doesn't move nearly enough air to keep everything cool with roughly 174 watts of power being consumed underneath the tank. The end of my stand/cabinet is vented with a large screen panel over a 12"x18" opening.
I use a dual blade window fan, mounted vertically in place of one of my door panels to force room air through the stand/cabinet.
I have a slimline Hydros temperature sensor mounted inside the cabinet, immediately underneath the tank where the hottest air collects. Control-4 senses 215 CabinetAir input and triggers output 215 Fans connected to Powerstrip-A Plug-2. Range is ON at 78F and OFF at 75F.
Here's the setups in case anyone is interested...
