Can you wrap rope leak detector around piping?

I have two connections (pump outlet tubing) and drain connection to a Redsea Reefmat that I'd like to monitor for leak detection. Can I just wrap the rope leak detector around the piping at these connections and program the Hydros to kill the return pump if leak detected at these joints?

If water touches the rope, it will trigger the alarm. So the location of the rope is irrelevant.
