Heater Outlet turned itself off

Woke up this morning to my Control 4 alarming. I have it in a collective with a WE. Tank is still cycling, so not a lot set up. Heater is set to come on at 72 and off at 81, tank temp alarm is set for below 76 and above 80. Right now I'm just using the control on the heater itself, set about 78, since I'm cycling. Has been running for a couple of weeks with no issues. Had the return pump off for an hour or so yesterday evening as I was working on the scape.

This morning I woke up and the temp was at 75.5, and the heater outlet was off, and the alarm was on. Now that outlet won't turn on unless I force it on. Also, is there no way to silence the alarm?? I had to change the acceptable range, or I was forced to listen to the alarm until tank temp comes up.

It has to drop below 71.5 for it to come on the way you have it setup.

are you sure? Why would it not be on if it's well below the off temperature? It's been working for weeks...
 
The lower setting is the turn on temp. The higher setting is the turn off temp. So if it is in between those numbers if it is on it will stay on till it goes above the high setting. If it is off it will stay off till it goes below the low setting.

Ugh...thank you. What's the point of the low setting then?
 
The reason for the two set points is hysteresis. It keeps the heater from cycling on and off too often. set the low number above your heater setting if you are going to use your heater thermostat for control.

So if I have the heater set at 78, I should set the low at 79 and the high at 80, or something like that?
 
Anything above you heater setting. Just don't go higher with the high setting than you want it to turn off. I think there has to be a difference of .4 degrees or more. 79 should work for you.
 
Say you have the heater range 78-80. If the tank gets to 80, the heater will turn off. The controller will not turn the heater back ON until the tank reaches 79. Then the controller will turn the heater ON and keep it ON until the tank reaches 80 degrees. This prevents the controller from turning the heater ON/OFF constantly when the tank is between 79.9 and 80 degrees. The constant ON/OFF is unnecessary, and it would also destroy the heating element and the outlet where the heater is plugged.
