Can you use just the power strip and program and such through the app without having either of the controls? I do have a wave engine that will hopefully be set up soon...

Nope they only work with the control units.

So how does that work? Do you plug a cord from power strip to control box?

The Power strips work wirelessly with a Control unit.
You will eventually be able to add the WaveEngine to the collective with a Control but right now you can not.
A collective is just a way the app makes the components look like they are one unit instead of having to logging into them individually.
The WaveEngine is a little older and slightly different than the Controls and does not have some of the capabilities of the other devices.
