Correct. You can still use the data/power cable. The battery would power up the brain of the XP8, but it would not be able to power the outlets. You will immediately get notifications if you are doing power monitoring. The outlets are isolated from the bus power and will not drain the battery on the X4 end.

The only problem is that your UPS is 24V, so even when the power goes out, the X4 will not be able to detect that it is running on the UPS. As far as the HYDROS is concerned, it still receives 24V, so everything would remain as is—no low-power notifications except the XP8 outlets.
 
I am curious though. I seen other controllers use adapter with line input. If it detects no power to that line it alerts controller it's on battery just saying.
 
The Hydros does not need that since it senses it is only running on 12v which is battery instead of 24v which is from AC powered supply. So if the command bus power is 12v the controller will go into the low power mode if you have that setup. If command bus is at 24v then it goes back to normal mode.
