Hoping someone can clarify this for me.

From the description, it looks like the WE to Apex control does not support actual programming, but just 'mode switching' for feeding, water change, and so on. IOW we can't change patterns from gyre mode to square mode or adjust flow speed and so on, just more or less on and off, correct?

You can create a mode and set the schedules so that a schedule will run in that mode only if you want.

But no actual changes in the programming of the WE to adjust wave patterns or power via the apex, we need to use the Hydros app for such things, correct?

you will have to do the setup within the Hydros app, but you would have to do that even with the Hydros controller, but it is the same app for both.
