Sharing my DIY AWC Pumps

Note for the pumps

Make sure to purchase the brushed motor version of the Kamoer KPHM 400ml or 600ml to be able to wire it directly to the XD Drive port.

As the Kamoer KPHM has three types of motor options:

1. Brushed DC motor
2. Brushless motor
3. Stepper motor

If somehow you purchased the brushless motor, you can still use it by connecting the red and white wires together to the positive terminal and the black wire to the negative terminal.

Turns out that I had enough drive ports on my Kraken & Launch to run this setup without using an internal XD. Had some adapters from a previous project that fit very snugly in the pass through grommets included with the project box. I glued them in for a more sold fit. And changed the label to remove the inputs and add labels. I tried many times to get the label on any painted but ultimately just used some clear packing tape to protect it. It’s far from perfect but looks plenty nice enough for me. Also went with the 600 pumps on this setup. Haven’t actually mounted and run it yet but just thought I’d show a different option for those not comfortable with soldering. You could also run it this way with the XD mounted externally. Thanks for the help and great write up.

Spacing is fine. Not sure if they may be longer than the 400 though. I had to bend the wire taps on the back to clost the case. Right angles crimp connectors or soldering may works to ease the fit.

They will not work off a drive port. The Sole is a stepper motor type dosing pump.

They will not work directly off a drive port. For steppers, you will need a driver and PWM controller to drive them.

Ideally, you would need 24V to power a stepper motor, but they also work fine with a 12V power supply.

The only benefit I can see from going with a stepper motor is that you can use TMC2209 Quiet Drivers to make the pumps quiet.

well, don't really need a stepper. Just wondering if a brushless would have better longevity over brushed for AWC / Continuous. I "top off" my ATO reservoir from my RODI continuously at around 7ml/min. Using a Kamoer stepper now which is fine. If brushless needs 24v then yes, I can see the XD won't do the trick.

Brushless motors usually perform better than brushed motors. I'm personally using the brushed motor for simplicity and cheaper replacement parts. The pumps push water from my saltwater mixing station up 10 feet and then travel through the basement ceiling 75 feet, then up again another 5 feet, then into my sump without any issues, and it only takes 13 minutes to do a 3-gallon water change. So far, I have had zero problems with the brushed motor doinig 3 water changes par day since I set it up

Hey @TanAsh - I'm about to embark on this project. Question on your setup within Hydros.

• How did you set it up - simple doser or smart and use a schedule?
• Did you calibrate?

I'm assuming you did simple and just used "Has Internal Schedule" within each...at least for the AWC side.

Just as simple dosers. No need for calibration, as the high and low sensors will control the draining pump and filling pump. I just used the automatic water change profile that is already on the Hydros app. As for the RODI pump you can set it up as ATO pump. In my case I use my to refill my reservoir whenever it empty

Works for me. For AWC, I was just going to set to run at the same time. That's how I have the Versas running. New salt goes in by the return pumps, waste from just below the reefmat. It should be close enough.

Completed my build! I cheated a bit and bought some cables. I tried soldering the GX12 4-pin and failed miserably! Didn't bother with the 5 pin. I did do two of the 2 pins. 1 worked and the other probably came undone when putting the housing back. Oh well, I had a few Drive cables around, so I just used those. Even though I bought cables, I had to cut them and splice back together to fit in the holes properly. Anyway, all done and it works.

I started the XD with power through the housing and that worked. Then I powered down my X2 and XS and connected those to the DIY AWC XD and powered things back up....all good! Joined the collective and now I have 3 simple dosers to play. Not going to use until I move my mixing station to the garage. For now, I have it in the collective and I use it as a power giver to the X2 and XS.
